https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/31/carbon-capture-technology.html CO2 is a waste management problem. We have for two centuries simply dumped the waste from energy production — which is carbon dioxide — in the atmosphere and not thought about it any further, and we are gradually waking up to the fact that that’s not acceptable! KEY POINTS: While trees and other plants can remove some carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, most climate change experts agree we can’t plant enough, fast enough, to do the job alone. Carbon capture technology has been around for decades, and is used to strip carbon out of factory emissions as well as remove carbon that’s already in the air. But it’s expensive, and until the cost of releasing carbon into the air rises, there’s little economic incentive to use it. Carbon capture technology will become cheaper, but it will never be zero. Hence, even the best carbon capture technology will be useless if we are not willing to put a price on carbon.

The change from CO2 'sink' to 'source' is already seen in the Brazilian rainforest. Can AI and machine learning play a role in new forestry projects?

Kerosene is highly flammable, causing accidental burns and house fires. In South Africa alone, over 200,000 people are injured or lose property each year due to kerosene related fires. Three multi-year reviews of admissions to Nigerian hospitals attributed around 30% of all burn cases to kerosene. Kerosene lamps release toxic fumes, which cause not only eye and skin irritation but also respiratory problems. https://littlesun.com/solarlesson-kerosene/

There are about as many people living without electricity today as there were when Thomas Edison lit his first light bulb. More than half are in sub-Saharan Africa. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/06/26/the-race-to-solar-power-africa

We’re at an inflection point in climate politics, where some governments are readying 30- and 40-year carbon-neutral plans and others are looking to coast into the next decade with pledges that are already five years old. Meanwhile people who have always suffered are contending with the fallout of inaction in the here and now. We need to align these two timelines and to broaden our definition of climate justice, if we are to achieve any measure of justice for the most vulnerable. But in order to do this, we must accept that climate politics are not so black and white any more.

A global transition to 100% renewable electricity is feasible at every hour throughout the year and more cost effective than the existing system, which is largely based on fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Energy transition is no longer a question of technical feasibility or economic viability, but of political will.
